I noticed that the players made the dungeons much tougher and deadly than the WotC people.

Game balance is a very difficult and learned thing in an RPG. I don't know which I would say is tougher between 3e & 4e, but it certainly didn't get significantly easier as EL + XP + monster roles vs PC roles is as much to keep up with and worry about as 3e CRs.
