The Music Thread

OK, I know Charlie posted some bands in the "Gotta put this somewhere" thread, but I figured this sort of thing needed its own thread. Especially after this post. So feel free to add your own crap in here.

First, Darkest of the Hillside Thickets. Frickin' awesome. I may have to download some of their other stuff from Amazon. How can you resist an album called "Cthulhu Strikes Back," written in the Star Wars font? You can't, that's how.

Speaking of which: Amazon MP3 downloads. Freaking awesome. No DRM (screw you iTunes). 99 cents a song. Maybe it's better to buy the real thing if you're buying a full CD, but to pick up a song or two or buy an EP it's much cheaper. They're also linked in to that Pepsi Points promotion, so 5 points = 1 song. My only gripe is that song previews don't appear to work right in Firefox.

What's really interesting is you can dig up some really obscure stuff, especially if you listen to artists that have done single songs for compilations you wouldn't otherwise buy. Case in point:

I looked up the new Jars of Clay Closer EP. Which is good... slightly different style than their previous stuff. If I actually knew how to classify music I might be able to explain just what type of different... the closest comparison in my limited musical knowledge is probably Coldplay-ish. But apparently they released another EP around the time of Redemption Songs called Roots and Wings that i never heard of. And a rendition of "Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing" on the City on a Hill compilation, which I probably would never have looked at or bought otherwise.

They also did a cover of "If I Stand" on a Rich Mullins tribute CD, which, again, I would probably not buy otherwise. But from there, I noticed that Chris Rice did a cover of "Calling Out Your Name," which is a great song, and if you've heard it and you've listened to any Chris Rice you pretty much know that's a cover that goes together perfectly.

So I ended up buying a crap load of music just because (1) I could actually buy them on a song-by-song basis and (2) I could dig through a lot of obscure/compilation stuff that I wouldn't otherwise have known about. Marketing genius, I say. Call me a Luddite, but this buying music online thing is awesome... as long as there's no freaking DRM. (Yes, yes, I could pirate it, but I like being legal.) I'm impressed in part because I haven't gotten much good new music in a while.

Also, there's a new free Bob Dylan MP3 on his site (link on the right sidebar) called "Dreamin' of You." It's an unreleased song from Time Out of Mind from some new collection that's coming out. Kinda dark and bluesy. I like it. Just don't make the mistake of buying it from Amazon, just because they're promoting it on their MP3 downloads site. D'oh.

More nifty music from following the Amazon.com MP3 Downloads trail.

JoC had a single on a compilation called Roaring Lambs (sold alongside a book by the same name). Picked up a "scratched" copy (which played perfectly fine) at McKay's for 68 cents. Decent CD, although half of the songs I don't particularly like.

In particular, though, the CD includes some really good songs from bands called Burlap To Cashmere and Over The Rhine. I've at least heard of BtC, although I haven't ever listened to them, and I don't think they've released anything in years. I'm going to have to see if I can find CDs from those two bands next time I'm at McKay's.

Also, picked up Bob Dylan's Time Out of Mind after listening to the previously mentioned MP3. Hadn't bought the CD, but I have one of the songs on The Essential Bob Dylan. Good CD.

OK, I pretty much can't stop listening to the Burlap to Cashmere song off that CD.

The Afters - Heard one of their songs on the radio today and it made me go back and listen to their Never Going Back To OK CD. More rock than my usual fair, although Charlie would probably say they were kinda emo. (Stylistically, of course, which is unusual for me. Lyrically, is there anything I listen to that couldn't be considered emo?)

"Never Going Back to OK" is one of those songs I listen to and wonder why it isn't on Rock Band (aside from the obvious "they're on a Christian music label"). I heard this on the radio a couple of times, and that's the whole reason I bought the CD in the first place. It's catchy.

"MySpace Girl" is worth a listen just for your reaction. If you don't read the backstory in the liner notes, it sounds kind of creepy (like Barenaked Ladies-style satire or something). Then you realize it's a true story with a happy ending. (Which I just don't get. C'mon, I'm less creepy than what's described in this song, so why does nothing like this work out for me? Oh yeah, because most other people aren't subject to The Fail Cycle* like I am.)

* This is an upcoming Chainsaw Buffet article, not a cry for help. I think. Maybe.

So I've been listening to this free downloadable sampler that Nettwerk put out called "Seriously West Coast Vol. 1" lately. (If the MP3 download was still available I'd link it.)

This has resulted in the following bands being added to my "stuff to look for next time I'm at McKay's" list.

Leigh Nash (the lead singer for Sixpence None The Richer and Fauxliage)
The Weepies
The Perishers
The Format
Great Lake Swimmers
Fauxliage

I picked up the Fauxliage CD at Best Buy today. It sort of reminds me of a less trippy, more folk Portishead, but then, I'm admittedly terrible at identifying musical genres.

Went to download another one of the Darkest of the Hillside Thickets albums, and under "people who bought this item also bought..." they had a download for Fleet Foxes.

I have a hard time describing music, so here's a description from one of the Amazon reviews: "The Fleet Foxes are a rock band that sounds like no other -- imagine a pastoral choir overwhelming a sweeping folk-rock band, in the middle of a sunlit forest in the spring."

Whilst I'm here, I should also mention the two bands we met at MTAC and interviewed on the podcast:
The Slants - Chinatown dance rock
The Man Power - comic book rock and roll

Holy crap. I saw someone reference a song called "Time Cube" by Honest Bob and the Factory-to-Dealer Incentives. (You may remember them from Guitar Hero and Rock Band.)

... this song is about exactly what you think it's about and it is farking awesome.

So I bought another album from Amazon MP3 today.

The Honest Bob CD (http://www.honestbob.net/) is turning out to be excellent. Lyrically, it reminds me of a cross between Weird Al and Barenaked Ladies. Musically... well, you know how terrible I am with musical genres. There's a song about Star Wars ("Tatooine") as well as a cover of "Head Like a Hole" that sounds like a 50's/60's rock song.

There is a band I saw mentioned on another forum called Alestorm. They describe their music as pirate metal.

I mention this for Chad's benefit, as I'm not sure pirates or metal are really my thing.

Weird Al to release songs as he records them. The first to come out Oct. 7. It will be iTunes exclusive (sucks) for the first 2 weeks, but will be on other digital download services (Amazon MP3 please?) after that.

From Slashdot.
